I
was so humbled to be with Nathan White's family at Arlington.
Because I carry a big, noisy camera I try to use the long,
telephoto lens as much as possible so I can stay quite a
distance from people whose emotions are tender and sacred.
These three pictures in a row captured for me the majesty
of Akiko's spirit and her love for her husband, this nation
and the cause of liberty. The moment was only two or three
seconds long. After the "missing man formation"
of the FA-18's passed overhead, Nathan's casket was being
lifted from the caisson. Uniformed personnel came to attention
and saluted. Others knew what to do. At this most tender
moment, Akiko gently clasped precious Courtney's arm and
showed her that she was to place her hand over her heart.
I don't think anyone saw it happen. I felt blessed to record
it. For those who remember, it was a moment not unlike Jackie
and John John. God bless Akiko. God bless the White family.
God be thanked for the preservation of liberty and the teachings
of a mother to her daughter and the example to the nation.
