Trip to Kenya
August
3rd - 17th, 2004
There is a place
near Chyulu, south of Nairobi, some like to call the "miracle
well." (Read
the Meridian article here). It is a project started by Bob and
Susan Roylance that has literally made the desert there blossom
as a rose. Dry, parched earth has given way to lush fruitful fields
and a people once threatened by famine are now a shining example
to other villages around them. Hard work and the faith of a small
group of Saints have brought water from the ground and great blessings
from the heavens.
How about spending
your vacation this year doing something that can really make a difference
in people's lives? Meridian Magazine is partnering with Reach the
Children to take a group of volunteers to Kenya, Africa to help
build a school for elementary school children and to spend time
with the Saints of Chyulu to see their miracle well. We will be
working side by side with villagers near Makindu to help construct
classrooms for their children. Our work efforts and donations will
bring educational opportunities to an impoverished community and
with it renewed hope and promise. Not only will we be seeing Africa,
we will be experiencing it first hand and come to know some of the
very real challenges it faces. This expedition will be the learning
opportunity of a lifetime and our participants will see up close
some of the complex and tough issues facing developing nations and
how one can truly make a difference.
We
will attend church in the small, rural community of Chyulu and experience
the church in one of the remote regions of the earth. The following
Sunday we will visit with our brothers and sisters in the capital
city of Nairobi. Be prepared for a spiritual feast and to be called
upon to participate in an after church fireside. We will gain lifelong
friendships and cherished memories.
Not all of the
trip will be work. The Great Rift Valley, the purported birthplace
of humanity runs through central Kenya and is famous for the archeological
digs of the Leakeys. Kenya is a country of great diversity and
stunning beauty. It is a county of spectacular contrasts in people,
land, wealth, climate, flora and animal life. We will spend time
in the wild animal parks, home to some of the most exotic and beautiful
animals in the world and we are guaranteed to see many of them;
lions, elephants, giraffes, leopards, rhinoceroses, baboons, zebras,
flamingos, impala, etc.
The trip will
wrap up with a visit to a Maasai village, the symbol of tribal Kenya,
and a cultural experience with the locals. We will get a chance
to taste alligator and giraffe meat at a well-known restaurant,
catch the City Market in Nairobi where we can fill our bags with
well-crafted and unusual souvenirs.
You can make
a difference. One person with vision and love can change a nation.
“Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation
of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is
great.” (D&C 64:33). We may not change a nation, but we can
help a little, and this coming August, we intend to do just that.
We would love to have you join us for this extraordinary humanitarian
trip.
