LDS Athlete Updates (for the week of Oct. 12-19, 2001)

College Football
Brock Ralph
(#80) had five catches for 100 yards and one touchdown (a 57-yarder) for Wyoming (2-4) in the Cowboy’s 24-13 loss to Air Force on Saturday…Washington’s Derek McLaughlin (#17) had nine punts, averaging 41.7 yard a kick, in the Huskies’ 35-13 loss to UCLA.  He had one punt blocked…Colorado place-kicker Jeremy Flores (#3) was 3-for-3 in field goal attempts (18, 51, 39 yards) and 2-for-2 in PAT attempts in the Buffaloes’ 31-21 win over Texas A&M…Marc Dunn (#5) got his first start of the season for Kansas St. (2-3) as starter Ell Roberson was sidelined with a sore ankle.  Dunn threw for 200 yards on 16-for-40 passing.  He threw one touchdown and two interceptions in a 38-19 upset loss to Mike Leach’s Texas Tech (3-2) team…Kurt Wallin (#59) had four tackles for Arizona St. (3-2) in the Sun Devils’ 48-17 loss to Southern Cal.  Brother Wallin also had one quarterback sack…Mark- Christian Jensen (#14) kicked one PAT for California (0-5) in the Golden Bears’ 48-7 loss to Oregon.  Teammate defensive end Tosh Lupoi (#94) had two solo tackles and one assisted tackle.…Aaron Boone (#13) had two receptions for 45 yards and one touchdown (a 31-yarder) for Kentucky in the Wildcats’ 29-25 loss to LSU…At Nebraska (7-0 and #3 in both polls), Ryon Bingham (#59) and Manaia Brown (#91) are backup nose tackles for the Cornhuskers.  Toniu Fonoti (#77) is the starting left offensive guard on an offensive line that is instrumental in Nebraska’s top-ranked rushing attack…Freshman Brad Weathers (#64) plays offensive guard for Mississippi State (1-4).  He graduated from Amite County High School in 1998.   Upon his return from the mission field this past spring, he enrolled in classes mid-term and participated in spring practice, where he emerged with the #2 spot at offensive guard…Kirk Tuck (#68) is the starting center for Alabama-Birmingham (2-4).  Teammate Jeff Tippetts (#82) is currently the third-string tight end for UAB…

Ty Detmer
(#14) did not play for Detroit (0-4) in the Lions’ 31-26 loss to Minnesota…Travis Hall (#98) had two tackles, two assisted tackles and a fumble recovery for Atlanta (2-3) in the Falcons’ 37-31 loss to San Francisco…Rob Morris (#94) had three tackles and two assisted tackles for Indianapolis (2-2) in the Colts’ 23-18 loss to Oakland…Lee Johnson (#10) is the punter for New England (2-3) and is averaging 38.3 yards a punt this season…

College  Soccer
Ryan Daley
(#9) is a soccer player at the University of South Carolina that we have overlooked this season.  Daley is the second leading scorer for the Gamecocks this season, having scored five goals and four assists this season.  Daley scored had a goal and an assist in Oct. 15’s 5-0 win over Gardner-Webb.  Teammate Joey Worthen (#8) had an assist in that game…

College Volleyball
Robyn Felder
(#15) is a middle blocker at Eastern Washington University.  In 14 matches this season, she has 178 kills, 82 digs and 34 blocks (one blocked) for the Eagles who are 11-3 overall and 4-3 in Big Sky Conference play this season…Michelle Johnson (#14) is a outside hitter/middle blocker at UNLV.  In 14 matches this season, she has 109 kills, 54 digs and 73 blocks (two blocked) for the Rebels who are 5-9 overall and 2-5 in Mountain West Conference play.  Sister Johnson’s uncle is Ralph Bobik, who played basketball for Creighton and the Phoenix Suns…At Alaska Anchorage, Brianne Halling (#3) had 14 kills, two digs and two blocks in the Seawolves’ five-set, come-from-behind victory (24-30, 27-30, 30-22, 30-28, 15-13) over Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 11.  Teammates Tiffany Massey (#14) (five kills, six digs), Starr Burgan (#13) (six kills, eight digs, one block) and Carolyn DeKay (#12) (six kills, two digs) were also instrumental in the big win.   On Oct. 15, UAA faced Alaska Fairbanks again and won in three (30-26, 30-25, 30-22).  In that match, Halling had eight kills and one block.  DeKay added 12 kills.  UAA’s record is now 13-7 overall and 6-4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Pro golf
Jay Don Blake
shot 4-under par and finished tied for 70th at the Invensys Classic at Las Vegas on Oct. 14.  Brother Blake collected $8,910 in prize money.
