The Revised and Enhanced History of Joseph Smith by His Mother
Edited by Scot Facer Proctor and Maurine Jensen Proctor

Appendix 1

Genealogy of the Smith and Mack Families as Given by Lucy Mack Smith

Editors’ note: Many will find the following material fascinating from Mother Smith’s history. As if to look in the family Bible of the Smith family, back on that page where personal family information is recorded in beautiful penmanship, herein is Lucy’s recording of her family’s genealogy. A careful study of this material will reveal the edge of stories of heartache and pain and joy and happiness. The unique numbering of certain individuals with the same name (Second Samuel, Third Samuel, Fourth Samuel, etc.) is left intact from Lucy’s original records. The following information is taken from chapter 9 of the 1853 edition of Mother Smith’s history, and incorporates all of the changes made by George A. Smith for the 1902 version of the history. Numbering of children, correction of spellings, and corrected entries of children have been added.

Here I would like to give the early history of my husband, for many facts might be mentioned that doubtless would be highly interesting, but as I am not able to give them in order, I shall decline making the attempt, and in the place thereof shall insert a transcript from the record of his family, beginning with Samuel Smith, who was the son of Robert and Mary French Smith, who came from England.

The above Samuel Smith was born January 26, 1666, in Topsfield, Essex County, Massachusetts, and was married to Rebecca Curtis, daughter of John Curtis, January 25, 1707.
