With the winds of change occurring ever faster, what can a family do to help each other remain strong and true to abiding gospel principles? Time for some FHE Fun!
Opening Song: #32 The Happy Day At Last Has Come
Opening Prayer: By Invitation.
Devotional: Time for some sweet scripture sharing. This portion of FHE can be quite brief, but do allow any who would like to share a scripture to do so. It can be a verse they found during the week that helped them. Encourage them to share why it made a difference. Learning to share, explain, and testify strengthens not just the “hearers”, but the “doer” also!
Activity:
Item Needed:
- A long rope
- A blindfold
- Scriptures
Stretch out the rope across the room in a straight line. Ask for two volunteers. Invite one to sit at one end of the rope as “the Scriptures” and hold the rope's end in his hands. Invite the second volunteer to put on the blindfold. Move him or her to a distant location in the room (clear out any dangerous obstacles). Have the rest of the group shout confusing directions.
Invite the blindfolded volunteer to ignore the directions, but to slowly move forward until he can feel the rope under his feet. Once he has found the rope, he may grasp it in his hands and use it to make his way to safety.
Application:
The Lord has given us a strong “rope” to guide us through confusing voices, opinions, and distractions. That “rope” is the Spirit that will speak to us as we study our scriptures. Ask the family how they're doing on their personal scripture study. Invite brainstorming and set some goals to improve daily scripture time. Explain that the more we seek the things of God, the more the Spirit can work with us to protect us from harmful directions shouted at us from society, friends, or others.
Ask for favorite scriptures. Allow sharing of them. Finish by setting a goal to read daily, both as a family and as individuals. Remind them that as they begin and end each scripture study moment (whether a few minutes or many) to use prayer and seek the Lord's help in understanding what they read. The more they read, the more they'll feel the Spirit in their lives.
Closing Song: #274 The Iron Rod
Closing Prayer: By Invitation.
Refreshments: Chocolate Pretzels (the stick kind) would be a great visual example of standing straight and true to the Lord. Here is a simple recipe that's also yummy!
