Focused on Christ
By C.S. Bezas

With the summer months upon us, kids have more free time on their hands. Here is a simple, but pointed Family Home Evening lesson to help illustrate the importance of time management. Time for some FHE Fun!

FHE Fun!

Opening Song: #226 Improve the Shining Moments

Opening Prayer: By invitation.

Devotional: Invite the group to share a meaningful scripture they encountered during the week. This is a super opportunity for family members to learn to express their feelings about scriptural truths and to become more comfortable with the process, should friends ask questions!

Activity:

Items Needed:

  • Each family member needs to bring one clean pair of socks to FHE.
  • One piece of paper and pencil for each family member.
  1. Have the family line up along one side of the room. Family members then take turns flinging a limp sock across the room as hard as they can.
  2. Have them wad up the second sock into the smallest ball possible. Then have each one take a turn flinging that sock as far as possible across the room.

Ask them to assess which one went farthest and why.

Application:

When we are focused, we go farther in life. Ask the family what goals they have set for their life. What you hear from them may surprise you. Some may have never set a goal; others may have beautiful goals.

Again, invite discussion on why one sock went farther than the other one. Which sock does each person currently feel like? Explain that the more we are focused, the more we become like the compact balled sock. We are able to go farther more quickly.

Ask each person to imagine the coming summer (which is just beginning) as having just now ended. What three things do they plan to have accomplished by that moment? Pass out the pieces of paper and writing utensils. Invite everyone to write down those three goals and to place the paper in their scriptures. Each day when they read their scriptures, invite them to review their three goals to see their progress. Share your thoughts and/or testimony of the importance of including Heavenly Father in goal setting processes, including petitioning His help along the way.

Perhaps the family would like to plan an end-of-the-summer party to celebrate the progress each one made! For after all, a family that is focused — especially in spiritual matters — will go far!

Closing Song: #140 Did You Think to Pray?

Closing Prayer: By invitation.
