Distinguished British Genealogist to Lecture at the Family History Library

SALT LAKE CITY — Colin R. Chapman, one of the foremost British genealogists today, has lectured on British and Irish genealogy throughout the world. Now, family history enthusiasts in Utah will have an opportunity to hear him speak. 

Mr. Chapman is well known in Britain for his contributions to family history research.  He has an impressive string of credentials; PhD, CEng, CSci, CChem, FEI, FINucE, FRSC, FRSH, FSG, and Lord of Pattishall Manor, Northamptonshire, England and has written fourteen books on the subject of genealogy, including Tracing Your British Ancestors . 

Mr. Chapman is a life Vice-President of the Federation of [British] Family History Societies, President of the Bristol & Avon Family History Society and President of the Gloucestershire Family History Society.  He founded or co-founded six British county genealogical societies.  He originated the three-letter Chapman County Code for British Isles counties, which formed the basis for a British Standard and is now the International Standard, ISO-3166. 

Mr. Chapman will give two lectures at the Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake City on Tuesday, October 14, at 12:30 p.m, and Wednesday, October 15, at 1:00 p.m.  His subjects will be: “ Was Your Ancestor Really Married?   Marriage Laws, Rites, Records, and Customs,” on Tuesday, and “Genealogy in Early British Censuses, 1086 to 1841,” on Wednesday.  Seating is limited.  Please pre-register for these lectures by calling 801-240-4950 or send an email to FHLClassReg@ldschurch.org.
