Temple Square Concerts for February and the 2002 Winter Olympics

A stunning galaxy of dozens of distinguished concert artists will perform at a total of 46 morning, afternoon, and evening concerts during 23 days of seemingly non-stop concertizing at Temple Square helping to celebrate the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.

Scheduled for Olympic visitors will be seventeen 10:00 a.m. concerts, seventeen 4:00 p.m. concerts, and twelve 7:30 p.m. concerts, all of which will be in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square. In harmony with standard concert protocol, children under eight years of age are encouraged to visit other venues rather than attend concerts.

Concert artists to perform include pianists, violinists, vocalists, choral groups, chamber musicians, and an Army Band.

Friday, February 1—Brilliant American violinist Kevin A. LeFohn and internationally-known New Zealand pianist Terence Dennis, who regularly perform together, will play Mozart’s Sonata in E minor, K.304, and works by Lilburn, Achron, Ravel, Aguirre/Heifetz, Turina/Heifetz, and Gershwin/Heifetz at an evening concert. Both LeFohn and Dennis have performed throughout the world.

Saturday, February 2—An annual treat for opera lovers is tonight’s district New York Metropolitan Opera Finals, featuring outstanding singers hoping to advance to the regional finals.

Tuesday, February 5—10:00 a.m.: Jeremy Patterson and Kristen Larsen, pianists; 4:00 p.m.: Melanie Richardson and Patrice West, pianists; 7:30 p.m.: The Brigham Young University Singers.

Wednesday, February 6—10:00 a.m.: Katie Day and Tiffany Back, pianists; 4:00 p.m.: Cassandria Martindale, pianist; 7:30 p.m.: Gala Celebrity Concert of New Zealand musicians featuring Marie-Adele McArthur, soprano; Jonathan Lemalu, bass baritone; Eugene Albulescu, pianist; and Terence Dennis, pianist. Individually, these artists have performed from the White House to European and Asian capitals and are on a host of CDs.

Thursday, February 7—10:00 a.m.: Jamison Livsey and Nathan Johnson, pianists; 4:00 p.m.: Joshua and Jared Wright, pianists; 7:30 p.m.: The Coombs Family Pianists of Natalie, 9, Zachary, 13, and older siblings Jonathan and Hilary.

Friday, February 8—10:00 a.m.: John-Paul Ownby and Andrea Pack-Davis, pianists; 4:00 p.m.: Rachel and Amelia Christensen, pianists.

Saturday, February 9—10:00 a.m.: Carrie Christensen and Sharee Martin, pianists; 4:00 p.m.: Jie Lu and Jacey Egbert, pianists.

Monday, February 11—10:00 a.m.: Coleen Clark and Kathy Buell, piano duo; 4:00 p.m. Linda Webber, pianist.

Tuesday, February 12—10:00 a.m.: Norene Emerson, pianist, and Susan Goodfellow, flutist; 4:00 p.m.: Marilyn Anderson, violinist, and Dorotha Smart, pianist.

Wednesday, February 13—10:00 a.m.: Cammie Johnson, pianist, and Arlene Derrick Gates, pianist; 4:00 p.m.: Richard Marshall, pianist; 7:30 p.m.: Young Artist Chamber Players, directed by Jack Ashton.

Thursday, February 14—10:00 a.m.: Sally Warner, pianist; 4:00 p.m.: Andrew Marshall, cellist; 7:30 p.m.: Utah National Guard 23rd Army Band.

Friday, February 15—10:00 a.m.: Kelly Astle and Emily Orton, violinists; 4:00 p.m.: Rocky Mountain Strings, violinists; 7:30 p.m.: International Children’s Choir, directed by Dr. Kathy Sorensen, specializing in music of many cultures, has toured throughout the world with impressive success.

Saturday, February 16—10:00 a.m.: Caitlin Robbins and Claire Swenson, violinists; 4:00 p.m.: Nonie and Meredith Marshall, violinists.

Monday, February 18—10:00 a.m.: Melanie Dewey and Christine Wilks, pianists; 4:00 p.m.: Stephanie Talbot, pianist.

Tuesday, February 19—10:00 a.m.: Abby Finlinson, pianist; 4:00 p.m.: John Allred, pianist; 7:30 p.m.: Brigham Young University Chamber Orchestra.

Wednesday, February 20—10:00 a.m.: Katie Robinson, pianist; 4:00 p.m.: Amalie Wickes, pianist; 7:30 p.m.: The Two Jennys in Recital, violinist Jenny Oaks Baker and pianist Jenny Naylor Richards, both distinguished performers.

Thursday, February 21—10:00 a.m.: Willem van Schalkwyk, pianist; 4:00 p.m.: Brandon Bascomb, pianist; 7:30 p.m.: the popular American Piano Quartet of nationally and internationally-known pianists Massimiliano Frani, Robin Hancock, Jeffrey Shumway, and Paul Pollei.

Friday, February 22—10:00 a.m.: Jennifer Duke, pianist, and Holly Dunaway, violinist; 4:00 p.m.: Robin Hancock, pianist; 7:30 p.m.: the much media-featured (including 60 Minutes) Brown Family of five Juilliard-trained young pianists.

Saturday, February 23—10:00 a.m.: Daniel Gledhill, pianist; 4:00 p.m.: Dustin Gledhill, pianist.
